Devin Singletary
Devin Singletary Competition cooking
Sun, May 1, 2022, 11:28 AM
The Bills drafted James Cook out of Georgia in the second round of the NFL Draft, and the rookie presumably will compete with Singletary and Zack Moss for playing time in 2022.
Analysis: Singletary ended the 2021 season on a tear, scoring nine touchdowns over the team's last six games (three regular season, three playoffs) while surpassing 80 rushing yards in four of them. However, the Bills mostly have run a committee system during coach Sean McDermott's tenure, and with Moss being a shaky option and Singletary being limited to one very nice hot streak in a three-year career, Cook now will fill out the room. While we imagine the No. 1 job in the committee is Singletary's to lose, the Bills didn't use a second-round pick on a benchwarmer. Expect the rookie to start chipping in on Singletary's workload right away, and Cook could even leapfrog Moss in short order for the No. 2 role.
Stefon Diggs
Stefon Diggs Secures four-year extension
Wed, Apr 6, 2022, 8:27 AM
Diggs agreed to terms on a four-year, $104 million contract extension with the Bills on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Diggs still had two years remaining on his five-year, $72 million contract, but after seeing the wide receiver market undergo a sea change this offseason, Buffalo decided not to wait things out. The four-year extension adds onto Diggs' previous contract, tying him to the Bills for the next six seasons. Diggs, who hasn't missed a regular-season game in his two years with Buffalo, racked up a career-high 1,535 receiving yards in 2020, and he set another career mark with 10 touchdowns in 2021. The 28-year-old will continue to enjoy his position as Josh Allen's top target heading into the 2022 campaign, a combination which has proven highly valuable for fantasy purposes.
Taiwan Jones
Taiwan Jones Returning to Buffalo
Thu, Mar 24, 2022, 3:59 PM
Jones agreed to terms with the Bills on Thursday, Sal Capaccio of WGR Sports Radio 550 Buffalo reports.
Analysis: Jones has been a key player on special teams for the Bills across the last two seasons, but he hasn't recorded any touches on the offensive side of the ball. He should play a similar role in 2022.
Jamison Crowder
Jamison Crowder Joining forces with Buffalo
Mon, Mar 21, 2022, 5:55 PM
The Bills and Crowder agreed to a one-year contract Monday, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.
Analysis: Buffalo has found its replacement at slot receiver after cutting loose Cole Beasley last week. Crowder had a down year for his standards in 2021, missing five games due to injury and finishing with a 51-447-2 line on 71 targets. With the upgrade in quarterback from Zach Wilson to Josh Allen, Crowder could be in line for a rebound as he joins forces with Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis at wide receiver.
Duke Johnson
Duke Johnson Signing with Bills
Mon, Mar 21, 2022, 12:17 PM
Johnson agreed to a one-year deal with the Bills on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: After coming close to landing J.D. McKissic in free agency, the Bills instead have brought in Johnson, who handled a key role for the Dolphins down the stretch last season. The 28-year-old will provide his new team with valuable veteran depth, while Johnson's ability as a pass catcher out of the backfield should make him worthy of PPR consideration while working behind Buffalo's top back Devin Singletary. The Bills also have Zack Moss under contract for the next two seasons.
Case Keenum
Case Keenum Sent to Buffalo
Sat, Mar 19, 2022, 3:16 PM
Keenum was traded to the Bills from the Browns on Saturday in exchange for a 2022 seventh-round pick, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: This was expected considering Keenum was due to earn $7.1 million next season. The long-time veteran has been a stable backup presence for teams over the years, having played in 35 games combined for three separate franchises in the last four seasons. With stalwart franchise icon Josh Allen already set at the quarterback spot, expect Keenum to be one of the better backups in the league once more.
Tommy Sweeney
Tommy Sweeney Path to targets gets murkier
Fri, Mar 18, 2022, 11:19 PM
Sweeney appears to be the No. 3 tight end on the depth chart following Buffalo's signing of O.J. Howard this week.
Analysis: Dawson Knox will remain the starter, but Howard has a stronger skillset and more NFL experience than Sweeney, so the latter is now the No. 3 entering offseason work. After catching just 17 balls over his first two NFL seasons, the 2019 seventh-rounder may have some work to do just to make the team.
Cole Beasley
Cole Beasley Heading elsewhere
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 11:02 AM
Beasley is set to be released by the Bills, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: The writing was already on the wall here, as the player and team seemed to have a falling out that got worse over time and the Bills gave him permission to seek a trade earlier this month, something that never materialized. Beasley is still as shifty as anyone on short, middle-of-the-field routes, so he'll make a good pickup for the right team. Meanwhile, Gabriel Davis' star continues to brighten.
O.J. Howard
O.J. Howard Heading north to Buffalo
Wed, Mar 16, 2022, 5:56 PM
Howard is signing with the Bills on a one-year, $3.5 million deal worth up to $5 million, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports, per a source.
Analysis: Howard has never quite lived up to his first-round pedigree, much of that due to some injury-plagued seasons, but this is a good landing spot for Phase 2 of his NFL career. Dawson Knox is the clear-cut No. 1 in Buffalo, but if anything were to put Knox on the shelf, Howard has the skillset to thrive in such a high-powered offense. Even with Knox on the field, the Bills have very little behind him, so Howard should see some targets even as he's getting his feet wet with his new squad.
J.D. McKissic
J.D. McKissic Signing with Bills
Tue, Mar 15, 2022, 12:00 PM
McKissic is slated to sign a two-year deal with the Bills, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: According to Schefter, McKissic's deal with the Bills is for $7 million, with the potential for another $1 million in incentives. The 28-year-old carried the ball 48 times for 212 yards and two TDs in 2021, adding 43 catches for 397 yards and a pair of receiving scores in 11 games for Washington. He'll provide Buffalo with an adept pass-catcher out of the backfield in 2022, a context that puts McKissic on the PPR radar while working behind the team's top back, Devin Singletary. The Bills also have Zack Moss under contract for the next two seasons.
Isaiah McKenzie
Isaiah McKenzie Staying with Buffalo
Sun, Mar 13, 2022, 5:14 PM
McKenzie agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract extension with the Bills on Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: McKenzie was scheduled to hit free agency but instead will stick with the Bills after posting 20 catches for 178 yards and one touchdown to go along with nine carries for 47 yards and another score last season. The 26-year-old primarily worked as a return man and averaged 24.3 yards per kick return and 7.7 yards per punt return in 2021. Emmanuel Sanders is a pending free agent and Cole Beasley is seeking a trade, so McKenzie could be more involved in the offense next season depending on Buffalo's offseason additions at wide receiver.
Jake Kumerow
Jake Kumerow Re-ups with Bills
Thu, Mar 10, 2022, 9:33 AM
Buffalo re-signed Kumerow to a one-year contract Thursday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Kumerow mostly played special teams while logging a career-high 15 appearances in 2021, only securing two of six targets for 28 yards in that span. The 30-year-old can safely remain off the fantasy radar in all formats, but re-signing him provides a nice boost to Buffalo's end-of-roster depth.
Mitch Trubisky
Mitchell Trubisky Target of Giants
Wed, Mar 9, 2022, 11:33 AM
The Giants are expected to seriously pursue Trubisky when free agency begins March 16, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: If he were to land in New York, Trubisky would reunite with first-year head coach Brian Daboll and first-year general manager Joe Schoen, both of whom were members of the Buffalo organization along with the quarterback in 2021. Linking up with the Giants would leave Trubisky in line to compete with incumbent Daniel Jones for the starting job, leaving it up to the team's new brain trust to decide which former top-10 draft pick is the best option heading into the regular season. Despite the Giants' apparent interest in him, Trubisky could be more motivated to head to a team that could present him with a clearer path to a starting job. Based on the current composition of their respective quarterback rooms, the Saints, Steelers and Seahawks all stand out as teams that could view Trubisky as a clear upgrade over their existing options at the position.
Cole Beasley
Cole Beasley Given permission to seek trade
Fri, Mar 4, 2022, 12:49 PM
The Bills have granted Beasley permission to seek a trade, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Garafolo adds that GM Brandon Beane told him Thursday that the Bills would welcome the slot man back and "no door has been closed" -- however, at this stage, it looks like the 32-year-old could be on the move, either via a trade or by being cut, given his non-guaranteed salary for 2022. Beasley, who is approaching the final year of a four-year contract that he signed with with Buffalo in 2019, is coming off a 2021 campaign in which he recorded 82 catches (on 112 targets) for 693 yards and a TD in 16 games.
Mitch Trubisky
Mitchell Trubisky Likely on the move
Wed, Mar 2, 2022, 12:52 PM
Coach Sean McDermott acknowledged at the NFL Scouting Combine that he thinks "it's unrealistic to think" that the Bills will be able to retain Trubisky, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN reports.
Analysis: After four years with the Bears, who took Trubisky second overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, the QB signed a one-year deal last March with the Bills to back up Josh Allen. Following a 2021 campaign in which he attempted just eight regular-season passes, it seems likely that Trubisky -- who turns 28 in August -- will now look to join a team that will give him the opportunity to compete for a starting job this coming season.
Tommy Sweeney
Tommy Sweeney Maintains clear-cut backup role
Wed, Feb 9, 2022, 8:18 PM
Sweeney played in 13 games during the 2021 regular season, catching nine of 12 targets for 44 yards and one touchdown.
Analysis: Dawson Knox missed a small bit of time, but even then Sweeney proved he's nowhere near the pass catcher that Knox is. Sweeney does a lot of the little things, but even with his 34 percent snap share -- not bad for a backup tight end -- he's mostly being used for his blocking skills and not his hands. Knox isn't going anywhere since he's now in the upper stratosphere of NFL tight ends, so the best Sweeney can hope for is that the Bills don't bring in too much competition this offseason. After missing all of 2020 due to a heart condition related to COVID, Sweeney's best performance since his 2019 rookie season is a modest 3-30-0 in Week 8 this campaign.
Dawson Knox
Dawson Knox Breakthrough season
Sat, Feb 5, 2022, 9:05 PM
Knox finished his third NFL season with 49 catches on 71 targets for 587 yards and nine TD catches over 15 games.
Analysis: Knox also found the end zone twice in the playoffs. His nine TD catches in the regular season tied for the league lead among tight ends and were the most for any TE in Bills franchise history. While the targets and yardage still fall short of the league's elite at the position, Knox may have outperformed every other TE in terms of outproducing his draft day value, which was pretty close to zero as an undrafted player in a number of leagues. As a 26-year-old with an elite quarterback locked into the system, Knox will probably be picked among the the top eight tight ends in almost every format next season.
Mitch Trubisky
Mitchell Trubisky Could return if market is cold
Wed, Jan 26, 2022, 12:55 PM
Bills general manager Brandon Beane said the team would like to re-sign Trubisky if the quarterback doesn't get the contract he's hoping for elsewhere, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: After signing with the Bills for 2021 and serving as Josh Allen's backup, Trubisky will try to find a chance to compete for a starting job. He's thus unlikely to re-sign with the Bills before the start of free agency, but he might consider returning as a backup if he doesn't find a favorable opportunity elsewhere. Trubisky attempted only eight passes in 2021 with Allen enjoying a healthy, productive season.
Zack Moss
Zack Moss Barely plays behind Singletary
Tue, Jan 25, 2022, 3:11 PM
Moss carried once for no gain across his six snaps on offense in Sunday's 42-36 overtime loss to the Chiefs in the divisional round.
Analysis: Though he had a clear path to the top backup role for a second straight game with Matt Breida a healthy inactive once again, Moss did little Sunday beyond providing an occasional breather for starting back Devin Singletary. After he and Singletary mostly worked in a timeshare over the first three quarters of the season, the backfield clearly became the latter's domain down the stretch as the Bills aimed to solidify playoff positioning. With averages of 4.5 yards per carry and 5.7 yards per target over Buffalo's final seven games dating back to Week 14, Singletary seemingly answered any questions about his ability to handle a three-down workload. The Bills may pare down some of Singletary's snap counts over the course of the full 2022 campaign to ensure he's able to carry the load in the games that mean the most, but Moss probably shouldn't be viewed as much more than a high-end insurance plan entering the upcoming season.
Emmanuel Sanders
Emmanuel Sanders Disappears from game plan Sunday
Tue, Jan 25, 2022, 2:54 PM
Sanders hauled in his lone target for a 16-yard gain Sunday in the Bills' 42-36 overtime loss to the Chiefs in the divisional round.
Analysis: Even with quarterback Josh Allen dropping back 39 times on the day in a back-and-forth affair between two potent offenses, Sanders wasn't able to make much of an imprint on the box score. In fact, the 34-year-old was just about phased out of the game plan, as his 27-percent snap share on offense was his lowest mark of the season. The Bills filtered most of Sanders' snaps to Gabriel Davis, who broke through with eight receptions for 201 yards and four touchdowns to dim just about any quiet buzz he might have had as a middle- or late-round sleeper heading into 2022 fantasy drafts. Davis' landmark performance presumably cements him into a regular starting role alongside Stefon Diggs and slot specialist Cole Beasley next season, increasing the likelihood that Sanders will have to fnd work elsewhere in free agency this offseason. The soon-to-be 35-year-old recorded 45 receptions for 678 yards and five touchdowns across his 14 regular-season and two playoff games with Buffalo.
