Looking good at OTAs
Mon, Jun 12, 2023, 1:34 PM
White has looked healthy in practices this spring, according to Sal Capaccio of WGR Sports Radio 550 Buffalo.
Analysis: White unsurprisingly had a down year in 2022 after his late-2021 ACL tear, and the season ended on a low note with a concussion forcing him out of Buffalo's playoff loss to Cincinnati. The 28-year-old is apparently healthy now and remains the No. 1 cornerback for one of the more talented defenses in the NFL.
Expects to avoid PUP list
Mon, Jun 12, 2023, 12:07 PM
Miller (knee) believes that he'll avoid the Physically Unable to Perform list when training camp starts in July, Ryan O'Halloran of BuffaloNews.com reports.
Analysis: Miller suffered a torn ACL on Thanksgiving against the Lions, but he appears to be nearing the end of his recovery as the 2023 season approaches. The linebacker said Monday that he has "good information from his doctor and his knee is all healed up". Regardless of how much he's able to participate at training camp next month, it seems quite possible that the 34-year-old will avoid the PUP list to open the year, allowing him to return prior to Week 6, potentially even Week 1 versus the Jets.
Devin Singletary
Devin Singletary Competition cooking
Sun, May 1, 2022, 11:28 AM
The Bills drafted James Cook out of Georgia in the second round of the NFL Draft, and the rookie presumably will compete with Singletary and Zack Moss for playing time in 2022.
Analysis: Singletary ended the 2021 season on a tear, scoring nine touchdowns over the team's last six games (three regular season, three playoffs) while surpassing 80 rushing yards in four of them. However, the Bills mostly have run a committee system during coach Sean McDermott's tenure, and with Moss being a shaky option and Singletary being limited to one very nice hot streak in a three-year career, Cook now will fill out the room. While we imagine the No. 1 job in the committee is Singletary's to lose, the Bills didn't use a second-round pick on a benchwarmer. Expect the rookie to start chipping in on Singletary's workload right away, and Cook could even leapfrog Moss in short order for the No. 2 role.
Buffalo adds in seventh round
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 4:49 PM
The Bills selected Spector in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 231st overall.
Analysis: Spector (6-foot, 233 pounds) is undersized by linebacker standards, but his testing at the combine was satisfactory even by safety standards. Even if the Clemson product can't consistently earn reps at linebacker, he should give Buffalo good special teams snaps thanks to his 4.6-second 40, 36-inch vertical and 122-inch broad jump.
Gets call from Buffalo
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 3:59 PM
The Bills selected Tenuta in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 209th overall.
Analysis: Tenuta split time between right and left tackle over his final two seasons (21 starts) at Virginia Tech. He has short arms, especially when considering his 6-foot-8, 319-pound frame, but he's an efficient blocker that could add sturdy depth for the Bills.
Another CB for Buffalo
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 3:00 PM
The Bills selected Benford in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 185th overall.
Analysis: A four-year player at Villanova, Benford has solid instincts and impressive ball skills, as he finished with 137 tackles, 47 pass breakups and 14 interceptions through 36 games. The Bills selected Kaiir Elam in the first round of this year's draft to add to a deep cornerback room, so Benford will need a strong training camp to earn a roster spot.
Buffalo bound
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 2:44 PM
The Bills selected Araiza in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 180th overall.
Analysis: Araiza has a bit of a cult following given he's a hard-tackling punter and has registered multiple punts over 70-plus yards at San Diego State. He'll compete for the starting job along with Matt Haack.
Goes to Buffalo after trade up
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 1:20 PM
The Bills selected Shakir in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 148th overall.
Analysis: Wide receiver was arguably one of the Bills' biggest needs entering Day 3 of the 2022 NFL Draft, so Shakir lands in an excellent spot. A four-start recruit out of high school, the Boise State product didn't exactly live up to the hype, but 77 catches, 1,117 receiving yards and seven touchdowns during his senior season cemented Shakir as an intriguing prospect. A fluid and smooth route runner, the 22-year-old can really fill any role in a receiving corps and should be able to threaten defenses at the NFL level with his 4.43 40-yard speed.
Heading to Buffalo
Fri, Apr 29, 2022, 9:52 PM
The Bills selected Bernard in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 89th overall.
Analysis: Bernard is the second player drafted off the Baylor defense in the third round. A linebacker, Bernard had two seasons with over 100 tackles in Waco and was on pace for three if not for an injury-shortened 2020. He ran a 4.59 40-yard dash at his pro day and had impressive jumps at the combine. Light for a linebacker at 218 pounds, Bernard will likely have to add bulk to play a reliable amount of snaps. That said, Bernard's speed and tackle production in college suggest that he could have success at the next level.
Circles the wagons in Buffalo
Fri, Apr 29, 2022, 8:29 PM
The Bills selected Cook in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 63rd overall.
Analysis: Buffalo adds speed and pass-catching ability to its backfield with the Cook selection. A five-star recruit out of high school and brother of Dalvin, Cook took a while to hit his stride at Georgia but was always impressive on a per-touch basis before breaking out as a senior. He saw a career-high 113 carries for the national champions and converted those into 728 yards and seven touchdowns. Cook's most NFL-ready traits are his route- running, pass-catching, and elusiveness. Georgia often split Cook out wide and used him on downfield routes in 2021. Cook is light for an NFL running back at 199 pounds, so he does not project for a workhorse role, but his explosiveness and passing-down chops should allow him to see the field. He will be competing with other young backs in Devin Singletary and Zack Moss, however, so it will be an uphill battle to make an impact as a rookie.
Buffalo's target at 23
Thu, Apr 28, 2022, 9:38 PM
The Bills selected Elam in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 23rd overall.
Analysis: Buffalo traded up two spots to get its preferred cornerback still on the board in Elam, who was a late riser in the draft process. Elam, a Florida product, was a blue chip recruit coming out of high school who made a seamless transition to SEC play, landing SEC All-Freshman honors in 2019. He checks in at 6-foot-1 and 191 pounds with 31.88-inch arms. Physically gifted, Elam ran a 4.39 in the 40-yard dash. Elam projects to start opposite Tre'Davious White in the Buffalo secondary.
Fifth-year option exercised
Tue, Apr 26, 2022, 12:19 PM
The Bills exercised Oliver's fifth-year team option for 2023 on Tuesday.
Analysis: Oliver, who was the Bills' first-round pick in 2019, has totaled 117 tackles, 12 sacks, eight pass deflections and three forced fumbles during his first three seasons in the NFL. Buffalo will likely engage in extension talks with the defensive tackle during the offseason, but he currently remains under team control through the 2023 campaign.
Quintessential hire
Thu, Apr 21, 2022, 5:24 PM
Quessenberry signed as a free agent Thursday, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reports.
Analysis: Quessenberry has starting experience for the Titans, though he probably slots in more as a valuable reserve for a stacked Buffalo lineup. He has the ability to play guard or tackle should he make the final roster and one of the starters gets injured.
Returning to Buffalo
Mon, Apr 11, 2022, 3:24 PM
Hart signed a one-year contract with the Bills on Monday, Maddy Glab of the Bills' official site reports.
Analysis: Hart will return for a second season with Buffalo. The offensive tackle has started 67 of 83 appearances during his seven-year career and figures to be a core depth piece for the Bills' offensive line during the 2022 campaign.
Stefon Diggs
Stefon Diggs Secures four-year extension
Wed, Apr 6, 2022, 8:27 AM
Diggs agreed to terms on a four-year, $104 million contract extension with the Bills on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Diggs still had two years remaining on his five-year, $72 million contract, but after seeing the wide receiver market undergo a sea change this offseason, Buffalo decided not to wait things out. The four-year extension adds onto Diggs' previous contract, tying him to the Bills for the next six seasons. Diggs, who hasn't missed a regular-season game in his two years with Buffalo, racked up a career-high 1,535 receiving yards in 2020, and he set another career mark with 10 touchdowns in 2021. The 28-year-old will continue to enjoy his position as Josh Allen's top target heading into the 2022 campaign, a combination which has proven highly valuable for fantasy purposes.
Re-signed by Buffalo
Mon, Mar 28, 2022, 2:45 PM
Boettger (Achilles) re-signed with the Bills on Monday.
Analysis: Boettger is recovering from a torn Achilles, so it remains unclear if he'll be healthy by the start of training camp. Regardless, he once again figures to provide depth along the Bills offensive line when he's finally cleared for game action.
Offer sheet will be matched
Mon, Mar 28, 2022, 2:18 PM
The Bills will match the offer sheet that Bates signed with the Bears last week, ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Bates' deal is a four-year pact. The 25-year-old thus will remain in Buffalo, where he'll continue to provide the Bills offensive line with depth and versatility.
Taiwan Jones
Taiwan Jones Returning to Buffalo
Thu, Mar 24, 2022, 3:59 PM
Jones agreed to terms with the Bills on Thursday, Sal Capaccio of WGR Sports Radio 550 Buffalo reports.
Analysis: Jones has been a key player on special teams for the Bills across the last two seasons, but he hasn't recorded any touches on the offensive side of the ball. He should play a similar role in 2022.
Signing offer sheet with Chicago
Thu, Mar 24, 2022, 10:34 AM
Bates intends to sign an offer sheet with the Bears on Thursday, Mike Kaye of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Once Bates has signed Chicago's sheet, the Bills will have five days to decide between matching the offer or allowing Bates to walk without compensation. A restricted free agent, Bates boasts both youth and upside, and he could fill a notable hole for the Bears' interior O-line.
Jamison Crowder
Jamison Crowder Joining forces with Buffalo
Mon, Mar 21, 2022, 5:55 PM
The Bills and Crowder agreed to a one-year contract Monday, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.
Analysis: Buffalo has found its replacement at slot receiver after cutting loose Cole Beasley last week. Crowder had a down year for his standards in 2021, missing five games due to injury and finishing with a 51-447-2 line on 71 targets. With the upgrade in quarterback from Zach Wilson to Josh Allen, Crowder could be in line for a rebound as he joins forces with Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis at wide receiver.
