Devin Singletary
Devin Singletary Competition cooking
Sun, May 1, 2022, 11:28 AM
The Bills drafted James Cook out of Georgia in the second round of the NFL Draft, and the rookie presumably will compete with Singletary and Zack Moss for playing time in 2022.
Analysis: Singletary ended the 2021 season on a tear, scoring nine touchdowns over the team's last six games (three regular season, three playoffs) while surpassing 80 rushing yards in four of them. However, the Bills mostly have run a committee system during coach Sean McDermott's tenure, and with Moss being a shaky option and Singletary being limited to one very nice hot streak in a three-year career, Cook now will fill out the room. While we imagine the No. 1 job in the committee is Singletary's to lose, the Bills didn't use a second-round pick on a benchwarmer. Expect the rookie to start chipping in on Singletary's workload right away, and Cook could even leapfrog Moss in short order for the No. 2 role.
Stefon Diggs
Stefon Diggs Secures four-year extension
Wed, Apr 6, 2022, 8:27 AM
Diggs agreed to terms on a four-year, $104 million contract extension with the Bills on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Diggs still had two years remaining on his five-year, $72 million contract, but after seeing the wide receiver market undergo a sea change this offseason, Buffalo decided not to wait things out. The four-year extension adds onto Diggs' previous contract, tying him to the Bills for the next six seasons. Diggs, who hasn't missed a regular-season game in his two years with Buffalo, racked up a career-high 1,535 receiving yards in 2020, and he set another career mark with 10 touchdowns in 2021. The 28-year-old will continue to enjoy his position as Josh Allen's top target heading into the 2022 campaign, a combination which has proven highly valuable for fantasy purposes.
Jamison Crowder
Jamison Crowder Joining forces with Buffalo
Mon, Mar 21, 2022, 5:55 PM
The Bills and Crowder agreed to a one-year contract Monday, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.
Analysis: Buffalo has found its replacement at slot receiver after cutting loose Cole Beasley last week. Crowder had a down year for his standards in 2021, missing five games due to injury and finishing with a 51-447-2 line on 71 targets. With the upgrade in quarterback from Zach Wilson to Josh Allen, Crowder could be in line for a rebound as he joins forces with Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis at wide receiver.
Case Keenum
Case Keenum Sent to Buffalo
Sat, Mar 19, 2022, 3:16 PM
Keenum was traded to the Bills from the Browns on Saturday in exchange for a 2022 seventh-round pick, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: This was expected considering Keenum was due to earn $7.1 million next season. The long-time veteran has been a stable backup presence for teams over the years, having played in 35 games combined for three separate franchises in the last four seasons. With stalwart franchise icon Josh Allen already set at the quarterback spot, expect Keenum to be one of the better backups in the league once more.
Isaiah McKenzie
Isaiah McKenzie Staying with Buffalo
Sun, Mar 13, 2022, 5:14 PM
McKenzie agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract extension with the Bills on Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: McKenzie was scheduled to hit free agency but instead will stick with the Bills after posting 20 catches for 178 yards and one touchdown to go along with nine carries for 47 yards and another score last season. The 26-year-old primarily worked as a return man and averaged 24.3 yards per kick return and 7.7 yards per punt return in 2021. Emmanuel Sanders is a pending free agent and Cole Beasley is seeking a trade, so McKenzie could be more involved in the offense next season depending on Buffalo's offseason additions at wide receiver.
Mitchell Trubisky
Mitchell Trubisky Target of Giants
Wed, Mar 9, 2022, 11:33 AM
The Giants are expected to seriously pursue Trubisky when free agency begins March 16, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: If he were to land in New York, Trubisky would reunite with first-year head coach Brian Daboll and first-year general manager Joe Schoen, both of whom were members of the Buffalo organization along with the quarterback in 2021. Linking up with the Giants would leave Trubisky in line to compete with incumbent Daniel Jones for the starting job, leaving it up to the team's new brain trust to decide which former top-10 draft pick is the best option heading into the regular season. Despite the Giants' apparent interest in him, Trubisky could be more motivated to head to a team that could present him with a clearer path to a starting job. Based on the current composition of their respective quarterback rooms, the Saints, Steelers and Seahawks all stand out as teams that could view Trubisky as a clear upgrade over their existing options at the position.
Mitchell Trubisky
Mitchell Trubisky Likely on the move
Wed, Mar 2, 2022, 12:52 PM
Coach Sean McDermott acknowledged at the NFL Scouting Combine that he thinks "it's unrealistic to think" that the Bills will be able to retain Trubisky, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN reports.
Analysis: After four years with the Bears, who took Trubisky second overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, the QB signed a one-year deal last March with the Bills to back up Josh Allen. Following a 2021 campaign in which he attempted just eight regular-season passes, it seems likely that Trubisky -- who turns 28 in August -- will now look to join a team that will give him the opportunity to compete for a starting job this coming season.
Dawson Knox
Dawson Knox Breakthrough season
Sat, Feb 5, 2022, 9:05 PM
Knox finished his third NFL season with 49 catches on 71 targets for 587 yards and nine TD catches over 15 games.
Analysis: Knox also found the end zone twice in the playoffs. His nine TD catches in the regular season tied for the league lead among tight ends and were the most for any TE in Bills franchise history. While the targets and yardage still fall short of the league's elite at the position, Knox may have outperformed every other TE in terms of outproducing his draft day value, which was pretty close to zero as an undrafted player in a number of leagues. As a 26-year-old with an elite quarterback locked into the system, Knox will probably be picked among the the top eight tight ends in almost every format next season.
Mitchell Trubisky
Mitchell Trubisky Could return if market is cold
Wed, Jan 26, 2022, 12:55 PM
Bills general manager Brandon Beane said the team would like to re-sign Trubisky if the quarterback doesn't get the contract he's hoping for elsewhere, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: After signing with the Bills for 2021 and serving as Josh Allen's backup, Trubisky will try to find a chance to compete for a starting job. He's thus unlikely to re-sign with the Bills before the start of free agency, but he might consider returning as a backup if he doesn't find a favorable opportunity elsewhere. Trubisky attempted only eight passes in 2021 with Allen enjoying a healthy, productive season.
Zack Moss
Zack Moss Barely plays behind Singletary
Tue, Jan 25, 2022, 3:11 PM
Moss carried once for no gain across his six snaps on offense in Sunday's 42-36 overtime loss to the Chiefs in the divisional round.
Analysis: Though he had a clear path to the top backup role for a second straight game with Matt Breida a healthy inactive once again, Moss did little Sunday beyond providing an occasional breather for starting back Devin Singletary. After he and Singletary mostly worked in a timeshare over the first three quarters of the season, the backfield clearly became the latter's domain down the stretch as the Bills aimed to solidify playoff positioning. With averages of 4.5 yards per carry and 5.7 yards per target over Buffalo's final seven games dating back to Week 14, Singletary seemingly answered any questions about his ability to handle a three-down workload. The Bills may pare down some of Singletary's snap counts over the course of the full 2022 campaign to ensure he's able to carry the load in the games that mean the most, but Moss probably shouldn't be viewed as much more than a high-end insurance plan entering the upcoming season.
Isaiah McKenzie
Isaiah McKenzie Gets four touches in playoff loss
Tue, Jan 25, 2022, 2:46 PM
McKenzie recorded one reception for a three-yard gain and carried three times for 15 yards across his 16 snaps on offense in Sunday's 42-36 overtime loss to the Chiefs in the divisional round.
Analysis: After busting out for 11 catches and 124 yards from scrimmage in the Bills' Week 16 win over the Patriots while both Gabriel Davis and Cole Beasley were out of the lineup, McKenzie predictably saw his snap counts and targets trend downward in the games that followed. That being said, offensive coordinator Brian Daboll made more of an effort to keep McKenzie involved over the Bills' final two regular-season contests and two playoff games compared to the first half of the campaign, with the 26-year-old garnering no fewer than four touches in any of those contests. Buffalo will likely look to retain McKenzie this offseason, but he could face a difficult path to earning more work on offense unless the Bills choose not to re-sign Emmanuel Sanders while also eschewing any major additions at receiver through the draft or free agency.
Quintin Morris
Quintin Morris Signs future deal
Mon, Jan 24, 2022, 4:12 PM
Morris signed a reserve/future contract with the Bills on Monday.
Analysis: Morris was in training camp with the Bills and joined the practice squad after being let go at roster cuts in late August. The rookie UDFA out of Bowling Green was elevated to the active roster for one game but didn't make his NFL debut.
Isaiah Hodgins
Isaiah Hodgins Sticks with Bills
Mon, Jan 24, 2022, 4:04 PM
Hodgins signed a reserve/future contract with the Bills on Monday.
Analysis: Hodgins spent the season on Buffalo's practice squad after failing to make the season-opening roster. The 2020 sixth-round pick was elevated for one game this year and played four offensive snaps without receiving a target.
Matt Breida
Matt Breida Inactive for divisional round
Sun, Jan 23, 2022, 4:26 PM
Breida (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against Kansas City.
Analysis: Breida will be a healthy scratch for the fourth time in the last five games. Devin Singletary and Zack Moss will handle Buffalo's backfield duties once again.
Dawson Knox
Dawson Knox Finds end zone twice in win
Sat, Jan 15, 2022, 11:19 PM
Knox secured all five targets for 89 yards and two touchdowns during the Bills' 47-17 win over the Patriots in an AFC wild-card matchup Saturday night.
Analysis: The athletic tight end finished with team-leading reception, receiving yardage and target totals on what was a stellar fantasy night overall. Knox recorded scoring grabs of eight and 11 yards in the first quarter to get the Bills' offense off to a fast start, and he subsequently contributed a 38-yard catch as well. Knox's field-stretching prowess could well play a key role again in a divisional-round matchup versus either the Chiefs or Bengals next weekend.
Stefon Diggs
Stefon Diggs Quiet night in blowout win
Sat, Jan 15, 2022, 11:14 PM
Diggs brought in three of four targets for 60 yards during the Bills' 47-17 win over the Patriots in an AFC wild-card matchup Saturday night.
Analysis: The odds on Diggs not being on the receiving end of at least one score on a night when Josh Allen tossed five touchdowns were probably remote, but that's exactly what transpired in the blowout victory. The multi-time Pro Bowler did check in tied for second in receptions and as the runner-up in receiving yards behind Dawson Knox, but the fact Allen spread the wealth around and Buffalo also wasn't forced to pass much in the second half capped Diggs' fantasy contributions overall. The 28-year-old will have a chance to boost his production in a divisional-round battle versus either the Chiefs or Bengals next weekend.
Devin Singletary
Devin Singletary Pair of scores in wild-card win
Sat, Jan 15, 2022, 11:08 PM
Singletary rushed 16 times for 81 yards and two touchdowns and brought in three of four targets for 13 yards during the Bills' 47-17 win over the Patriots in an AFC wild-card matchup Saturday night.
Analysis: Josh Allen stole the show with 374 total yards and five scores in the blowout win, but Singletary capped off the other two of Buffalo's record-setting seven consecutive touchdown drives with a pair of visits to the end zone of his own. The third-year pro averaged an impressive 5.1 yards per carry, and his second scoring jaunt, a 16-yarder late in the second quarter, served as his longest run of the night. Singletary has proven to be an ideal complementary component to Allen's work through the air and has proven capable of handling a true lead-back workload with double-digit carries in five consecutive games going back to Week 15. The 24-year-old should play another key role in next weekend's divisional-round matchup against either the Chiefs or Bengals.
Josh Allen
Josh Allen Five TD passes in wild-card win
Sat, Jan 15, 2022, 11:02 PM
Allen completed 21 of 25 passes for 308 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions during the Bills' 47-17 win over the Patriots in an AFC wild-card matchup Saturday night. He also rushed six times for 66 yards.
Analysis: Allen spearheaded an unforgettable offensive performance by the Bills, one in which the team set a new postseason record with seven touchdown drives in their first seven possessions. The fourth-year signal-caller capped off five of them with touchdown tosses to Dawson Knox (twice), Emmanuel Sanders, Gabriel Davis and Tommy Doyle, and he became the third player in the Super Bowl era with at least 150 passing yards and 50 rushing yards in a single half of a playoff game. Allen's 84% completion rate on the night also qualified as the highest by a quarterback with 25 or more attempts in a playoff game since Aaron Rodgers' 86.1% figure in a 2010 divisional-round game. With this momentous, confidence-building performance under his belt, Allen heads into the divisional round with an abundance of momentum as he and his teammates prepare to either visit the Chiefs or host the Bengals next weekend.
Matt Breida
Matt Breida Sitting Saturday
Sat, Jan 15, 2022, 6:35 PM
Breida (coach's decision) is inactive Saturday against the Patriots.
Analysis: For the third time in four games, Breida won't be available to the Bills offense, leaving the backfield to usual suspects Devin Singletary and Zack Moss.
Zack Moss
Zack Moss Quiet Week 18
Mon, Jan 10, 2022, 8:27 PM
Moss carried five times for eight yards and caught two balls for six yards during Sunday's 27-10 win over the Jets.
Analysis: Perhaps Moss would have gotten more work had the Bills pulled away from the 4-13 Jets earlier, but it was close enough for most of the afternoon that the team stuck with hot hand Devin Singletary, who's emerged as the team's clear-cut No. 1 running back in recent weeks. At this stage, Moss is fortunate just to have separated himself from Matt Breida, but the former will be a dart option in playoff pools even if you believe the Bills will advance far. Moss finishes his second regular season with 96 carries for 345 yards and four rushing scores, which equates to a disappointing 3.6 yards per carry. He also had a modest role in the passing game with a 23-197-1 line. All in all, it was a rough sophomore campaign for the 2020 third-round pick.
